A Modern Archive Environmental Monitoring System

by | May 23, 2024 | Archives, Customer Story

At the heart of the Alabama State Archives, where historical treasures are preserved, Keri Hallford has been instrumental in revolutionizing environmental monitoring with the aid of Conserv’s technology. Her story illustrates the profound impact of integrating cutting-edge solutions into archival practices.

Environmental monitoring challenges in a multi-era building

Before the adoption of Conserv’s technology, the Archives faced significant hurdles due to outdated environmental monitoring methods. “Our building was built in three parts and three very different decades,” Keri explains, which led to inconsistent environmental control across various sections. The existing archive environmental monitoring system relied on hygrothermographs and HVAC systems that were ill-suited to provide the necessary data granularity or reliability needed for effective preservation. Keri’s introduction to Conserv began at a pivotal workshop and quickly evolved into a trial that showcased the system’s potential.

Implementing a modern archive monitoring system

The installation of Conserv’s sensors and gateways was a significant undertaking, especially considering the timing right before the pandemic lockdowns. She successfully deployed the system throughout the building, ensuring comprehensive environmental monitoring just days before lockdown.

Real-time environmental data during crisis management

The true test of Conserv’s effectiveness came during an unexpected HVAC failure in the peak of summer. Thanks to the advanced environmental monitoring system at the Archives and real-time data provided by Conserv, Keri and her team could monitor the situation remotely and adjust their disaster plans accordingly. “And it was very nice being able to have all of us on the Conserv program and just monitoring from afar,” Keri emphasizes the critical role of the technology during this crisis.

Collaborative system development for archive preservation

Keri has been a vocal advocate for improvements and has actively engaged with Conserv to enhance its functionalities through direct feedback. Her proactive involvement in the system’s development has been invaluable in refining the technology and making it more user-friendly for archival applications.

Setting new standards in archive environmental control

Keri Hallford’s journey with Conserv at the Alabama State Archives demonstrates the transformative power of targeted technological solutions in the preservation of cultural heritage. Her story is a testament to the crucial role that modern environmental monitoring systems play in safeguarding historical artifacts for future generations. Through her dedication and the capabilities of Conserv’s technology, the Archives have set a standard in the archival community for innovative preservation practices.
